Recently the US Supreme Court made it a federal crime for companies to discriminate against employees due to their sexuality or gender.
51 years ago on the 28th of June 1969, the first brick was thrown – this is a timely example of why pride still exists.
One in five LGBT people have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity in the last 12 months.
I am one of those 1 in 5 people. I was recently on a train from London to my home, someone heard me talking on the phone (I have a camp voice) then proceeded to call me the f word and threaten to shoot me in the head.
I don’t write this for sympathy, just to demonstrate that in our societies a lot of prejudice still exists towards LGBTQ+ people.
In most of the Western world, legislation is now in place to protect us at work, and it’s great to see the US taking action on this. This privilege doesn’t extend to a lot of our communities around the world – and that is why the fight goes on.
I hear people talking about Transgender folks like they talked about Gay people back in the day. ‘Unnatural’ ‘Coming for your children’ etc. You could play some of today’s commentators alongside clips from the 60’s and basically see no difference. We’ve been through these arguments before.
Marsha P. Johnson, a black transgender woman, threw the first brick at the stonewall riots and in doing so started a cultural revolution. But, the culture has still not caught up with Marsha and folks like her – and that’s why the fight goes on.
